Charles; that old familiar feeling
June 4th, 2009 | by ecadman |Ah yes, another architecture blog post about Prince Charles. Except that hopefully this will be funny AND mildly depressing, rather than just the latter.
News Junkies’ attention was caught today by a couple of fascinating articles about Prince Charles’ crusade against the grey squirrel.
We’re no experts on squirrels, although they do seem to provoke strong responses, emotional and otherwise, from all sorts of people.
But the whole thing is far more entertaining if you swap grey squirrels for modernist architects and red squirrels for traditionalist architects. In fact it all starts to feel a little familiar…
The Sun – Charles v squirrels
The Mail (our favourite thus far) – Exterminate! Charles declares war on entire population of grey squirrels to save our native reds
The Times – Prince of Wales calls for grey squirrels to be killed by landowners

No, I don’t think you do know much about grey squirrels – either that or you don’t like modern architcts. Grey squirrels are deeply unpleasant creatures with appalling tempers, and, apart from multitudinous other characteristics which make them a pest, perhaps most relevant to the issue of being like architects, once you’ve got them in your property, it’s a terrible job to get them out again and may cost a lot of money. So not a very good comparison, methinks.
