Elitism in Australia and Renzo Piano on working through the recession

Renzo says his studio isn’t really feeling the effects of the recession, which is nice for him if a little galling for everyone that is. But that doesn’t mean he isn’t empathetic. Apparently, after the Pompidou, Renzo got no work for years and he now sees leaner times as an opportunity to work on the projects you usually only have time to dream about.

And the Australians follow up BD’s report on exclusivity in the profession with a stroy on how the profile of the profession is cahnging down under.

Renzo’s Chicago triumph

It must be nice to be described as ‘the world’s best architect’ by none other than Richard Rogers. But News Junkie likes to think that Renzo Piano is more concerned with making well-designed buildings than accolades from other starchitects.

Yes, News Junkie has developed a bit of a crush on Renzo, despite the Shard and despite having never met him or been able to fly out to visit his buildings.

Brad Pitt, Frank Gehry, Renzo Piano and Ordos 100

It’s a big day for big names. Renzo Piano has won a new building commission; Brad Pitt unveiled a new list of architects unveiled for his New Orleans project; the recession has a silver lining for an early Frank Gehry building that was due for demolition and there’s a roundup of schemes for the Herzog & de Meuron curated Ordos 100 project.

Less starry stories include a new building for the Union of Architects in Russia, support for the green schools bill from the AIA and a revamp for the des Halles district in Paris.

A quiet news day…

What with everyone in the UK obsessing about Prince Charles and the big wave of news that came through yesterday and over the weekend, today has been a bit quiet.

News Junkie was hoping for news about stalled projects in Moscow but the Russian media is completely dominated by the Eurovision song contest.

But we did find an interesting piece about sexism in the architecture industry in Australia and a few interesting new projects for you…

Piano downsized, Parrault wins Sofia and Libeskind extends the Jewish Museum

Some big news for some big name architects today – Libeskind wins the jammy job of adding to his own design with a Euro 10million extension.

And Dominique Perrault gets to design the entire city centre for the beautiful town of Sofia. The news doesn’t seem to be so good for Renzo Piano’s proposed skyscraper in New York though…
