The march of BIM and ‘ghost architecture’

While some people (News Junkie included) still value the old-fashioned architectural drawing, there’s no denying BIM has some advantages and planners love it. Wisconsin is just the latest area of the world to begin demanding BIM models in the early stages of planning.

Meanwhile in New York, there are signs of life for the Arts Centre originally proposed by Daniel Libeskind for the World Trade Centre site, but will it still have Gehry on board? How do we stop important privately-managed buildings from becoming ‘ghost architecture’? And Coney Island gets a nod of approval.

Moscow takes matters into its own hands, Rem gets reduced and RMJM eyes up Iraq

All those projects that have gone on hold in Moscow may get a new lease of life after City Hall showed a bit of initiative and took matters into its own hands by setting up a group to buy land off the developers.

Elsewhere in the world Rem Koolhaas’ tower in New York looks like it might be a bit of a stump, RMJM eyes up Iraq and Ai Weiwei calls for a web boycott in China.

Aravena wins Marcus Prize and Greater Paris gets scaled back

Alajandro Aravena must be among the most worthy winners of a big architectural cash prize in recent history. If you read BD’s big piece on him you’ll understand why. 

Also in today’s news round up: The recession claims another victim in the US, with inter-disciplinary artist and architect Vito Acconci forced to close his studio and the famous Mariinsky Theatre in Russia is looking for a new design.

New York New York plus Graft’s Russian Jewish Museum

It’s a pretty New York heavy news round up today, with more rumblings from Atlantic Yards, the opening of the High Line and New York University’s new building proposal.

Thom Mayne has been announced as artist in residence for the LA film festival, and SanDiegoans (is that right?) are protesting against a jail expansion using twitter.

Outside of the States, nineteen pro-bono designs have been unveiled to rebuild the burnt homes in Victoria, Australia and Graft unveils its plans for the Russian Jewish Museum.
