An Obamy urban policy?

It has finally happened; Obama has remembered that Urban regeneration was a key part of his pre-election policies. You can watch the video of his speech on the White House website, but cynics like News Junkie will want actions rather than words.

Elsewhere, Murcutt blames fusty planning officials for lacklustre architecture in Australia, SOM’s  Sears Tower gets renamed and Jean Nouvel transforms the Ile Seguin.

Moscow takes matters into its own hands, Rem gets reduced and RMJM eyes up Iraq

All those projects that have gone on hold in Moscow may get a new lease of life after City Hall showed a bit of initiative and took matters into its own hands by setting up a group to buy land off the developers.

Elsewhere in the world Rem Koolhaas’ tower in New York looks like it might be a bit of a stump, RMJM eyes up Iraq and Ai Weiwei calls for a web boycott in China.

And if you’re curious about what the biggest practices in architecture earnt last year, the Arch Record might be able to help.  Cold cash rarely floats News Junkies’ boat and things have changed an awful lot since last year, but the list is fairly informative if you like that kind of thing.

Foster’s green light in Moscow and sad news from LA

So, yesterday News Junkie was wondering what to give Norman Foster for his birthday and got some entertaining responses (some not suitable for publishing). But now the city of Moscow has trumped us all by coughing up the funds for Foster’s stalled Zaryadye project.

It’s a sad day in LA as the Museum of Contemporary Culture sheds in architecture curator. And the Italians stage one of the most visually arresting protests News Junkie has seen thus far, placing a toilet and lots of toilet paper outside Richard Meier’s Ara Pacis museum.

A quiet news day…

What with everyone in the UK obsessing about Prince Charles and the big wave of news that came through yesterday and over the weekend, today has been a bit quiet.

News Junkie was hoping for news about stalled projects in Moscow but the Russian media is completely dominated by the Eurovision song contest.

But we did find an interesting piece about sexism in the architecture industry in Australia and a few interesting new projects for you…
